Neither Man nor Beast

So they say women are better shoppers than men, and I have to agree. Or, at least, women are better endurance shoppers. Case in point: John and I take several buying trips a year to NYC, where we spend days on end walking and walking and walking, from the hotel to the shows, endless miles of show aisles, and from the shows out to eat and back to the hotel. Last time we took Chickpea along to the Coterie show because those fashionistas love a cute dog. Witness then, the photos I snapped in our hotel room over the course of three consecutive evenings. Apparently all that walking and looking and choosing can take it out of a guy — and his dog! As I was the only one left awake to take pictures, I guess that means I win? And, no, I didn’t share these with John until after we were home.

Friend. Good.

I asked one of our shopgirls (i.e. someone under the age of 30) to fire up our first ever Facebook page a while ago. A few days later, we found out that we’re still big nerds. Dawn over at the Poppishop kindly set us straight: friending people you don’t know is “creepy,” “uncool.” and “spammy” (which I don’t even think is a word, unless you’re saying something like, “This canned-meat sandwich tastes rather spammy”). Since Dawn is the bestest person in the whole wide world, we sent her a funky cool (aka weird) little Japanese doll-girl-thingy to make it up to her. And taped a note to it that said: “Will you be my friend?” This is the picture she sent back:
The hi-lo approach.

A customer came in the other day and complimented me on my outfit, then added, “You’ve got that high-low thing down.” John, being a boy, said, “What the heck is high-low? Like . . . you’re looking so good all the guys wanna say ‘Hi-lo’?” I explained it to him later: you create an outfit that mixes a high (i.e. “expensive”) piece or two with a few low (i.e. “consignment shop”) pieces for an ensemble that looks like it cost more than it actually did. Or, in other words, the sum of the parts is greater than the whole. It might look a little something like this:
Project: Shop Dog

If you haven’t visited the shop recently, then you haven’t met Chickpea! She’s a rat terrier (also known as a bat-eared wriggler) and is just settling in as our new shop dog. She’s not quite the social butterfly that Pierogi was, but she’s learning fast. Probably because so many of our customers are still stopping by with treats in their pockets.
Obviously, cuteness is in her genes. Here she is (second from the right) with some of her brothers and sisters just before we brought her home. From New Hampshire, no less, so I guess she’s a New Englander. And likes to run around out in the yahd. That is, when she’s not working as a Red Orchard model.
Rebecca’s purple pendant.

Rebecca Askin used to work for us before she went away to college and got all smart. When she came to visit the other day, she happened to be sporting a floral pendant from Shari Dixon that she picked up for an employee-discount song back in the day. While she collected quite a few things in her time here, she says this necklace has turned out to be her favorite.
